Who Can We Trust?

It seems like there’s a news story everyday about items manufactured in China being recalled due to some form of defect in craftsmanship or the hazardous nature of the materials used. This has many people fearful as to the safety of products made in Asia, especially in China. I have to say, even though this has shown that there are some safety standards that should be strengthened in China, the companies outside of China ordering these goods have a responsibility to mandate the quality of craftsmanship and materials used in these items.

At Vinpower Digital, all of our products are designed and programmed at our American headquarters located in Southern California. We outsource the fabrication of our hardware to companies in Taiwan, (which has higher governmental standards on production than mainland China), but we also demand that our products meet the strict international standards of the American and European governments for safety. Our office in Taiwan inspects all items built to make sure that our products adhere to the RoHS, FCC, CE protocols as well as our own very high standards.

At Vinpower Digital, we believe it’s wiser to spend a little more money in advance so that we don’t have to pay a much higher cost later. Our reputation for quality and performance in the field of CD/DVD/Blu-ray/HD DVD optical disc duplication products is the basis of our success and it’s taken us far in a short period of time. Our pledge to our current and future customers is that we will always put our product above profits!

From Humble Beginnings Part III

With the growing success of the SharkCopier line, Calvin realized he needed to complete his product mix with a robotic autoloader duplicator. Not fully aware of the immense undertaking an autoloader would be, the quest was started. Due to the intricate complexities that are not even a consideration in the manual tower, such as alignment and picking issues, it took over a year just to develop the first working model of the Vinpower Digital TITAN line of autoloaders.

The next step was putting it in the market and testing them under real world situations. We could have never expected the type of havoc small variations in humidity, atmosphere, and other unforeseen elements would have on the autoloader where the manual towers never had an issue. Luckily our engineers are located in our California corporate office and they were able to speak directly to the customers and on occasion visit them at their facility to see the issues first hand. We would work directly with the users to test our solutions allowing us to improve the units immediately instead of waiting to get feedback from a foreign manufacturer. The hiccups in the first production helped make each subsequent line and new design even better and more reliable. Today Vinpower Digital’s line of standalone duplication equipment is unrivaled in quality and performance.

It didn’t take long for others to recognize the quality, attention to detail and strong support that Vinpower Digital offered could benefit their business and customer base gaining more and more partners in the industry. The journey is still far from over and there’s a lot we learn everyday about our products and how to improve them, Vinpower Digital has come a long way from their humble beginning and that van. Hopefully with the support of our partners, we can continue to grow as a company and put out new and innovative products.

From Humble Beginnings Part II

Taking a chance that he could make a difference and a big impact on the optical disc duplication industry, Calvin assembled a team of engineers to develop his own products.  Finding qualified engineers that shared Calvin’s ideas and passion for, what at the time was a niche product, was not easy, but again perseverance paid off and the team came together.

At the same time, Calvin needed to find vendors that he could source materials from and fabrication plants that could create the principal products from his team’s designs and specs.  In order to reduce costs and stay competitive, Calvin frequently traveled and communicated with companies in Taiwan to find the right balance of quality and reliability.  Even though Calvin was from Taiwan and had many contacts in the area, this was no small task given the time difference and distance.  But the determination paid off resulting in Vinpower Digital’s first original offering the SharkCopier standalone CD/DVD manual tower duplicator.  The SharkCopier had many advance for the time like an aluminum frame, auto-counter, Partition Naming, Load and Copy, and more.

Innovation wasn’t enough to keep the company moving forward.  Calvin needed to get the Vinpower Digital products on to the market and increase sales if the dream was to come true.  In order to keep costs down and prices affordable, Calvin knew that he needed to move higher volume than he could manage on his own.  The only way to push up the volume was to work with established resellers to offer the Vinpower Digital or an OEM’d version under the companies own brand.  To attract the right resellers, Calvin knew he had to offer something unique that the established manufacturers did not provide beyond simply price alone.  So first, he needed to improve the visibility of Vinpower Digital.  He began by increasing the number of electronics and broadcasting trade shows Vinpower Digital participated in.  Then he began hiring a bigger staff of employees with broader sales and marketing experience.   Even though some companies saw Vinpower Digital’s marketing push and greater exposure as competition, they began to realize that Vinpower Digital could offer them opportunities beyond their current supply channel that would not only help them better compete with the existing competition, but grow in directions they were not able to develop on their own.

From Humble Beginnings Part I

As Vinpower Digital rises in the duplicator field to become the leading global manufacturer, it’s always inspiring to think back to where the company started from. History is the key to our future, and even though our company is relatively young in years, the electronics industry is a fast paced environment infused with young blood to develop newer and greater innovations.

Working part time selling computer parts online while still a graduate student, our CEO Calvin Chang, had a vision that duplicators and duplicator accessories would soon become standard office accessories like the fax machine and paper copier. With margins drying up in the computer parts industry, he set out to make a name in the growing duplication equipment market. Starting out with a van and a great deal of determination, Vinpower Digital was born.

First starting out as a system integrator, buying parts and assembling equipment for sale, the business grew, but Calvin was not satisfied with the existing components on the market used to build a duplicator. Attempting to work with the manufacturers to offer his input to improve the reliability and quality of the duplication process, he was further frustrated when his ideas were either rebuffed or offered across the board to all of their customers. Seeing the writing on the wall, Calvin decided to develop his own standalone duplication controller and specialized casing to offer the highest quality product and differentiate from the competition.

DVD Still preferred method to watch movies

There’s been a lot of discussion and speculation that direct video access (on-demand service) through a PC or cable/satellite provider will replace the DVD format for movie viewing by the masses, current research contradicts this assumption.  Even though the development of high speed internet access and fiber optic cables allows movies to be downloaded quickly and provided in high-definition from the internet or through cable/satellite providers, consumers are still sticking with the tangible DVD format.

As evident from current sales, consumers are still enamored with the optical disc such as the DVD format.  According to data recently published on One to One online (25 July, 2007), in 2006 consumers spent US $23 Billion on DVD purchases and rentals compared to $932 million for on-demand services through the internet, cable or satellite.  Even though on-demand service is a growing industry, there’s still a wide gap between it and the market for a physical DVD.

As the DVD format capacity grows with the introduction of Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats, consumers will still have a draw for physical media that they can keep over an intangible on-demand service.  This shows me that there is still significant growth ahead for the “DVD” format in its various incarnations compared to digital transmission of data over a computer or television.  So for those wondering if duplication is still a wise investment, I can say there are 23 billion reasons to say yes!

Business and a Little Enjoyment Mixed Together

Recently members of the Vinpower Digital staff traveled to Oregon on a business trip to meet with a major American company.  The reason for the trip was to discuss new directions for future generations of our duplication lines (stay tuned to future blog entries where I will announce this new product).  Considering the meeting was on a Friday, we figured we could stay over an extra day as a fun business retreat as well.  Oregon is a beautiful state with lush green mountains and huge waterfalls.  Beyond business, it allowed our engineers an opportunity to get out of their offices and away from their computers for a day and enjoy life in nature.  It’s good to recharge your batteries and our staff works extremely hard and long hours, so any free time is very precious and they take full advantage of it.  Below are a few select snapshots from our short getaway:

Even picking Blueberries, Calvin’s mind is still on work as he compares the large plump Blueray berries to the new high capacity Blu-ray discs.

A Building Rises

While digging through old files we found some pictures of the early stages of construction for our building in Alhambra, California, USA. The office and warehouse we occupy was built from the ground up specifically for our growing needs beginning in the summer of 2003 until we took occupancy in the spring of 2004.

The images below show the empty lot as construction started with a recent picture of our completed building as it stands today. If you are in the area, please stop by and say hello!

Vinpower Digital’s family is growing

With Vinpower Digital’s success in the duplication field, the company has needed to hire more employees to maintain our work flow. To us, we see every Vinpower employee as an extended member of our family. Recently a member of the Vinpower family had a new addition to her own Family. Our lovely Brenda had a beautiful healthy baby boy in April and graced us with a surprise visit during her maternity leave. Below is a photo of Calvin, Brenda, Baby Omar, & Ryan.

Greater Influence in the Community

Recently Vinpower Digital’s CEO, Calvin Chang, was interviewed by Chinese Daily, a daily newspaper aimed at the growing Chinese community living in America. The journalist wanted to do a story about Computex and the growth of its influence in the IT and electronic industry here and abroad. To get a better perspective the journalist sought out a respected member of the electronic community who understands the marketplace and the influence Taiwan and Computex is gaining globally. This lead to an interview with Mr. Chang which appeared in the May 29, 2007 issue of the Chinese Daily.

Since the article is written in Chinese, the following is a brief summary of the article along with a link to the actual article below:

With the Computex trade show taking place in Taipei, Taiwan from June 5th ~ 9th, 2007, it is becoming increasing important for western businesses. With 30,000 oversea buyers attending the Computex , compared to 100,000 Asian buyers, western businesses see the benefits of traveling to Taiwan to source products and parts. Calvin Chang, CEO of Vinpower Digital, discusses the importance of Computex for everyone looking to purchase IT/electronic products as well as for Taiwanese and other Asian sellers to be seen at Computex. In fact, powerhouse American electronic trade shows like CES and NAB are seeing fewer buyers looking to make purchases at the show. In contrast, increasing numbers of overseas buyers are looking to make deals and commit to purchasing quantities of parts and products immediately. Vinpower Digital Shares Technology in Joint Venture

At Vinpower Digital, we are known for our OEM/ODM labeled standalone duplication products that are sold by the biggest companies in the optical media duplication field. A lesser known fact is that we work with many of the biggest manufactures of optical media discs and recordable drives. Because of our expertise in the field, many of these companies use us as their primary BETA tester. In addition, they also come to us when they want to develop a new product to get our input or to adopt our products into their designs.

Case in point is the new Plextor PX-DM300 compact 3 drive CD/DVD standalone duplicator recently on display at the DSE trade show in Tokyo, Japan from May 16 – 18, 2007. In a joint venture project with Plextor (one of the leading manufactures of optical media recordable drives), Vinpower Digital helped create this new compact slot drive system certain to make a global impact in theduplication market. We were chosen to work on this project because of our strong engineering background and the fact that we currently have the most reliable and functional standalone duplication controller on the market. Plus Plextor knew that we could meet their lengthy list of stringent requirements essential in order to brand this unit with the Plextor name.
