Eternal 5D data storage claims to be able to store up 360 TB of content for 13 billion years

5D storage

If you’ve seen the Superman movies or read the comic books, you’ll recall that Superman’s parents recorded the history of Krypton along with a lifetime of their own knowledge and possible answers for Superman on a small crystal that can last a lifetime and endure extreme temperatures. At the time, that seemed like the incredible musings of science fiction and just some far-fetched story arc to explain the unexplainable. Well maybe that crystal technology was not so far-fetched after all.

Scientists at the University of Southampton, in the UK, have made an amazing discovery using nanostructured glass, they have developed the recording and retrieval processes of five dimensional (5D) digital data by femtosecond laser writing. As described in a press release disseminated by the University of Southampton, the process works by “…recording using ultrafast laser, producing extremely short and intense pulses of light. The file is written in three layers of nanostructured dots separated by five micrometres (one millionth of a metre). The self-assembled nanostructures change the way light travels through glass, modifying polarisation of light that can then be read by combination of optical microscope and a polariser, similar to that found in Polaroid sunglasses.” In simple terms, these scientists found a way to laser inscribe a tremendous amount of data onto a glass disc by distorting the laser light as it penetrates the glass “disc” to separate the light particles and allow it to see in a 5 dimensional manner.

Of course this technology is in its infancy stage at this time, but just knowing it’s possible to record essentially all of our recorded history and ensure that it will last through another possible ice age or thermal meltdown and survive until the next species inhabits the Earth and evolves into intelligent sentient beings that can discover these historical archives and have a full historical understanding of who we were and what we accomplished in our time on Earth. That’s the stuff comic books are made of, but maybe comic books are not fairy tales but rather a challenge to reach our full potential.

Here’s a very enlightening video for a topic most of us take for granted, the amazing technology behind an Optical Disc Drive

how ODD works

When was the last time you thought about the incredible genius behind the invention of the light bulb, or even our ability to create and harness electricity for that matter? I would guess probably rarely if ever, because today we take these amazing leaps in technology for granted. That’s also true for how complicated it truly is to accurately and consistently duplicate optical discs through an Optical Disc Drive (ODD). I’ve worked in this industry for nearly 12 years and I honestly never knew how many intricate parts had to work together with essentially little to no room for error just to burn a single disc, let alone hundreds, if not thousands of them.

I recently came across this video about the amazing technologies behind an ODD and found it very fascinating. It’s a testament to the intellect of the engineers that developed the first CD recorder drive, then DVD recorder drive, as well as the Blu-ray recorder drive. They had to consider so many issues that the common person would probably have never imagined. The video is in Japanese with English subtitles, but I found it very fascinating and I imagine there are others out there that are like me and will be just as enlightened. Click on the below link to see for yourself how much thought and ingenuity the engineers have to consider to get the common ODD to work accurately, which we’ve taken for granted for many years:

Vinpower is proud to partner with a number of high quality ODD manufactures to offer drives that are enhanced exclusively for the duplication market. The iConnect Mini can easily allow people to share their photos, videos, documents, etc. with another person instantly.

share PQI

Picture this scenario. You’re at an event, maybe your child’s school performance, a concert, sporting event, or on a holiday. You’re taking tons of pictures and videos with your iPhone or iPad. A close friend or family member who’s with you saw your pictures and videos and wished they could have a copy for themselves. Without the iConnect Mini, you would have to go through the hassle of downloading the pictures onto a computer, tethering your phone so it’s unusable during the process, then going through your hundreds or even thousands of photos to find the few that you plan to pass along to that friend. Once you selected the pictures, then you have to transfer those photos onto a disc or a pen drive in order to give them to that friend. The friend may lose or forget to give back the pen drive, wasting your time and now you lost a perfectly good pen drive. The other option is to email each picture, 1 at a time due to size limitations, until you’ve sent all the pictures they want, then your friend has to open all of the emails and download each picture individually back onto their phone or computer. Of course for videos, you can forget email because they are too large to send.

There’s a much simpler way, just connect the iConnect Mini into your iPhone or iPad, transfer the pictures & videos with one button onto the iConnect Mini, then connect that same iConnect Mini into your friends iPhone or iPad using the Lightning connection and easily transfer the exact pictures, videos, documents, etc. that you want to share with them directly onto their mobile device and viola, you’re done. Instantly and hassle free, you are able to share images while still in the moment. If your friend doesn’t have an iPhone or iPad, then you can use the USB3.0 connection and transfer those files directly to their computer. If there are any pictures or files you don’t want anyone to have access to, you can easily use the Touch ID security to encrypt the files and prevent others from being able to see or access them from a mobile device or through the computer.

The iConnect Mini is the perfect accessory for anyone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, especially those that like to take and share pictures and videos with friends, family and loved ones. Ransomware is on the rise and the best way to overcome its affects is to back up your data on optical discs!

ransomware.jpg

There have been a number of stories all over the world recently about companies or organizations that have been held hostage by cyber criminals using specialized malware that locks up all the computers and servers on a network, preventing anyone from accessing any of the files or content on them. The content is not deleted, but simply blocked from anyone being able to access them due to very sophisticated encrypted computer programs. The company or organization is then asked to pay a ransom in order to receive a virtual key to unlock all of the content, (hence the name ransomware).

In fact within the past few weeks, there were two public cases of a major city hospital and a major American city was attacked by a ransomware with two drastically different results. The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, a hospital in Los Angeles, was hacked with ransomware and the hospital had no access to any of its patient’s files or anything helps on the computers. Ultimately, the hospital had to pay the criminals for access as even the FBI was powerless to restore the content. In another recent case, the city of Durham, North Carolina, was also attached by Ransomware, but this time they didn’t pay a penny because they continuously made back-up of all their files and simply restored their computers with the backed up files.

The best way to back up all your files, especially for SMB’s and individuals, is to back up your files onto optical discs. Optical discs not only allow you to recall and restore your archived content quickly, but they are impervious to viruses and outside attacks. Whether it’s ransomware, spyware, virus, etc., making copies of your important and critical files onto discs just makes sense and keeps everyone protected.

Vinpower is the only Controller manufacturer that supports drive firmware updates for all optical disc drives on the market today

drive-fw-update.jpg

Vinpower has established itself as the premier manufacturer of standalone duplication controllers, especially for optical discs. We were the first to offer a wide range of unique and useful features and we’re still developing new helpful features, particularly for heavy duplicator users. While our competition is either leaving the industry or significantly reducing their offerings and capabilities, Vinpower marches on to ensure that we still provide the exceptional quality and range of features and options that we have become known for.

One of the key features that is critical, especially for heavy duplication users, is the ability to update the optical disc drive’s (ODD) firmware (FW) directly through the duplicator’s controller. Currently, Vinpower is the only controller manufacture that offers this feature, which supports all internal ODD’s that are available on the market today. Unfortunately, today’s ODD’s tend to see more glitches and bugs than previous years, this is mostly due to the low cost nature of the ODDs and the manufacturer’s limitations in time and resources to provide as wide of range of test as previously performed before releasing the drive onto the market.

Most of the bugs are related to media compatibility or other easily correctable issues, but in order to correct the problems, the user must upload the latest ODD FW. For those with duplicators using a non-Vinpower controller, that means you have to remove each drive, connect them to a computer, and update them one by one. That’s fine if you only have a small handful of drives. But if you have multiple duplicators with 10 or 15 drives in each one, then that process is going to be difficult and time consuming. With the Vinpower controller, you can update all the drives in the duplicator simultaneously in minutes without removing any of the drives. That saves a tremendous amount of time and hassle, keeping you focused on duplicating rather than updating.
