There’s More to International Trade Shows than Just the Exhibition

We’ve posted a number of blogs about various trades shows that we’ve attended and it’s obvious from those entries that our staff remains busy with attendees from start to finish. That is true for the 2008 Spring Hong Kong Electronics Fair as well. Instead of boring you with the same ole details about the success of the show and the valuable contacts we made, I’d rather fill you in on a more interesting topic, the Hong Kong nightlife!

hk-lan.jpg

If you travel to Hong Kong for work or pleasure, a “MUST” visit destination for nightlife activities is LAN KWAI FONG. When you venture down to Lan Kwai Fong, you’ll find yourself in the centre of the city’s hottest, trendiest, and most exciting night spots. When we arrived at Lan Kwai Fong, we were surprised by the heavy stream of people. It was full of people on every uphill road walking from one hot spot to another. I even questioned if I was still in Hong Kong because more than half of the people there were foreigners. In fact it was more like a street scene from London, England than a Chinese city. England’s influence from their 100 year occupation is still very evident, yet the friendly and entertaining Chinese culture shines through as well. In any case, Lan Kwai Fong has a very international flair to it from the melting pot of cultures that inhabit the area.

hk-lan2.jpg

For starters when in Lan Kwai Fong, you should satisfy your appetite before hitting the bars and/or clubs. Personally, I would recommend the famous, YUNG KEE RESTAURANT, for the perfect dining experience. You can start with flavorful hot tea blending in as the local Hong Kong people do. For your main course, I recommend dining on their most popular dish, Roasted Goose! How delicious is the Roasted Goose? I think “perfect” doesn’t do the dish justice, but is the only adjective I can think of that sums up this course. After dinner it’s off to party or mellow out at a club or bar and you don’t have to look far to find a suitable place.

hk-yung.jpg

Whatever you’re interested in, I bet you can find it by simply starting off with a casual stroll around the street. Mingle with celebrities and local trend setters at sleek and sexy clubs. Dance till dawn as international DJ’s spin hip and funky music on the turntables late into the early morning. Hang out with friends in traditional watering holes offering an intense selection of beers and ales. Spice it up at tropical bars as bartenders serve up colorful and exotic cocktail mixes. Scream for your team at your favorite sports bar. Plus the waiters know your name making you feel as if you’re amongst friends and family rather than just frequenting another bar or club.

With great food and an exciting atmosphere, Lan Kwai Fong is definitely Hong Kong’s top night-life sightseeing excursion.

The 103rd China Import and Export Fair

Recently we exhibited at the China Import and Export Fair, also called the Canton Fair, which is held twice a year, spring and autumn. This fair has taken place in Canton since its inauguration in the spring of 1957. It is China’s largest fair of the highest level, offering the most complete merchandise and the largest attendance and business turnover for its kind. Preserving its traditions, the Fair is a comprehensive and multi-functional event of international importance.

It’s our second time to attending this show; however, it is very different from the electronic trade shows we have exhibited at before. How different? You might see a customer who visits another booth and asks how to be a distributor of bathtubs. Immediately afterwards, he will come to our booth and asks the same question about duplicators. To me, it shows that these customers might not be an established distributor of electronic products, but they have the ambition to work with a product they feel will be both popular and profitable globally. The increasing rate of exposure is the main advantage to attending the Canton Fair.

canton-fair-4-08.JPG

To further illustrate the changes in the world we live in today, the Canton Fair added many new security rules primarily due to the 2008 Olympics being held in Beijing. In order to keep the Fair safe, every exhibitor was required to register their entrance identification months in advance coupled with numerous references to prove your countries citizenship. Every product shipped to the fair required far more detailed descriptions listed on the paperwork than the previous time we exhibited at Canton Fair. According to the local newspaper, the 103rd Canton Fair was the strictest one on record. The security examination to enter the Fair was almost the same as the airport security check. Although it was not easy to enter the Fair, it was obvious to see that a lot of people endured the added security to attend this show (as shown in the below picture). If you planned to join this year’s spring Canton Fair, you would need to be ready to fight the hustle and bustle from the crowded visitors.

canton-fair-4-08-047.jpg

The Fair was very successful for us and we received many inquiries from the visitors we spoke with, so it was very encouraging that we are providing the right product. To keep our competitive edge, we will continue to persist in our philosophy of “quality, service, innovation, share/win”, while providing our customers with new products and the best service…

canton-fair-4-08-102.jpg

To conclude, I would like to share a funny occurrence with our dear readers of this blog, regarding our small booth at the Canton Fair. During most of the time at the Fair, we had a lot of international distributors interested in our automated equipment. Although we were very happy with the great interest, but since we got just a small booth, to gauge the benefits to our company, it became very crowded quickly. Try to imagine me swarmed by so many customers, answering questions and servicing everyone almost at the same time contained in such a small size booth. Two of my colleagues had to stand outside the booth like busy bees trying to rescue their queen bee. It was quite a spectacle to see.

Blu-ray is the big topic at NAB

Having exhibited at NAB 2008 in Las Vegas, NV, the main message that I took away from the show is “can you copy Blu-ray”? It seems as though every other question was about Blu-ray duplication. Once we answered, “yes, we have Blu-ray duplicators”, it was then followed by, “what’s the cost”? Even though the price is a bit higher than a DVD duplicator, they were still enthralled with the anticipation of transferring from DVD to Blu-ray.

Even though the Blu-ray duplication market is significantly smaller than the DVD duplication market, but the DVD market paled in comparison to CD at one point as well. So it’s only logical to think that the Blu-ray market will blossom as the costs become more manageable and there are more people creating Blu-ray content.

In the meantime, while the consumers are waiting for the Blu-ray duplication equipment to reach a price that meets their needs, the visitors that came by our booth were captivated by the new SharkCopier LS and Xerox Duplicators which each feature a unique and distinctive advantage over existing standalone duplication towers.

The SharkCopier LS with LightScribe capability is the first manual tower standalone LightScribe publishing system allowing users to copy and label discs through the same device in the same drive. The savings and convenience were a big hit as they marveled at the improved labeling quality. Seeing a manual tower pop out 15 fully printed discs in a single run simultaneously really struck a cord with our visitors.

The Xerox Duplicator series also really caught their attention as they learned how they could load their image files directly from a PC onto the duplicator’s internal hard drive. Not only does this process save time, especially if you have multiple files to duplicate, but they were also impressed with how easy the program was to operate and manage. Plus with the expected release of Blu-ray capable Xerox Duplicators, it was a logical fit to use the “Drag and Drop” operation to load the masters onto the duplicator rather than wait the 45 minutes it could take to produce a single BD master disc. The soon to be released Xerox Blu-ray duplicator will take just a fraction of the time to load the master image file onto the duplicator’s HDD so that the duplication process will be much quicker and convenient.

So it’s encouraging that Blu-ray has created such a demand and that the market is building for this product and we are excited to make all forms of optical disc duplication available for this growing market.

Visit Vinpower @COMPUTEX Taipei 2008, at the brand-new TWTC NANGANG Exhibition Hall!

As COMPUTEX TAIPEI grows larger this year with the use of now 4 different venues in total, the success of TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall opening has no doubt marked a significant beginning for the show! Vinpower will have a brand-new booth visually and new product offerings at this show. If you plan to join COMPUTEX, please visit our booth located at TWTC K516 and share with us what’s certain to be a brilliant year.

computex-building.JPG

As COMPTEX TAIPEI 2008 enjoys its grand opening in the brand-new TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall, it will also be one of the largest exhibition venues in Asia. TWTC NANGANG is located in Taipei City’s Nangang Economic and Trade Park.
This was developed by the company which organized the world famous TAIPEI 101 New Years firework display for the past three years. The extravaganza left international guests in awe. Design, construction, and operation of NANGANG Hall emphasize the three features of professionalism, MRT (public transit system) interconnectivity, and mega capacity.

1. Professionalism: TWTC NANGANG is the first purpose-built exhibition hall in Taiwan designed specifically for hosting large exhibitions. It is equipped with a large lobby to handle large crowds and process registrations. Other professional touches included hidden cabling troughs, loading/unloading zones and exhibition access controls.

2. MRT Interconnectivity: TWTC NANGANG is connected via underground corridors to the MRT stations for the Neihu Line and Blue Line. Once MRT service is available, it will carry more than half of all exhibition traffic, so visitors can arrive at the exhibition hall easily and safely. As the Neihu Line is also connected to the Songshan Airport, buyers from out of town can take the MRT from the airport straight to TWTC NANGANG without having to worry about traffic jams or the weather.

3. Large Capacity: TWTC NANGANG offers twice the space of TWTC Hall 1. The lobby, outdoor exhibition spaces and conferencing space together can hold nearly 3,000 standard booths. The exhibition hall on the 4th floor is 126m by 180m in size and has a ceiling height of 27m. When used for large concerts, it can hold nearly 30,000 people, making it the largest indoor performance venue in Taiwan.

Having participated in past Computex trade shows, which have been very beneficial, we recognized the need for a more modern and effective building to showcase such a popular trade show. This new building will better reflect the technological innovation and product quality that is expected of vendors from Taiwan and that you will see from Vinpower Digital.

CES, An unforgettable experience

Saturday (When we arrived):

We arrived in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 5th, so we could put up the booth. We arrived at night, so we just unloaded our product at the booth and went for dinner with all the team together. After that, we try to relax for a while. Some of our team tested their luck and went to the Casino to play Black Jack. I think Nogard won some money, but some, who will remain nameless, loss big.

Sunday (A day before CES):

We met up the next day at the buffet in the Paris hotel for lunch. We ate a ton of seafood, which was very tasty. After lunch, we went directly to the show floor so we can start decorating our booth.

Monday (First day at CES):

The first day at CES was successful but also very tiring; many interesting people came to visit our booth, impressed with our new product releases. We also went to visit some of our customers that were exhibiting at CES as well.

ces-p1012501.jpg

Tuesday (Second Day):

The Second day was much like the first, except we had more visitors. Many were existing resellers, as well as a number of previous resellers who haven’t bought from us for a long time. Both the current and previous resellers came to our booth to check out our exciting new releases.

2008 is expected to be an extraordinary year for Vinpower Digital, with the release of many new products for a more complete line in terms of optical duplicators.

That day 3 of our engineers, headed back to the office first while 4 of us remained at the show. That night we had a dinner meeting with the team from one of our valued vendors.

Wednesday (Third day):

This day was a little bit soft compared to the previous 2 days. Because the traffic flow had slowed a bit, my co-workers took the opportunity to explore around the show and look around. That day we received a very nice visit from one of our vendors in Taiwan.

Thursday (Last Day of the Show):

The last day was the shortest in terms of operating hours for the show, but the longest because we had to tear down our booth. The show ended at 4pm but we finally finished packing everything around 7pm. With nothing left to do, we start heading back to California. However, to our surprise, we had a lot of visits that day from some of our vendors, resellers and customers taking the opportunity to see us before we head home.

ces-dsc04693.jpg

We had a great time at the CES show, which was an unforgettable experience. We had so many things to do including preparing and setting up the entire booth by ourselves as well as clean it up too. So it was tiring but such a great experience too! The best thing is all of the positive feedback from the show, which makes us more confident about our new products.
The last day of the show was Ryan’s birthday, so we made him a small paper cake, and sang happy birthday to him.

Success at CES

Recently we exhibited at the CES convention in Las Vegas, NV where we introduced our newest products set for release in early 2008. We showcased the Xerox Duplicator, the SharkCopier LS, the SharkCopier DC, and The Cube autoloader to much excitement and anticipation from those who visited our booth.

ces-booth-2008.jpg
Our Booth at CES

The Xerox Duplicator offers a new twist on the typical standalone duplicator in that image files can be transferred directly from a PC onto the Duplicator’s internal hard drive. This saves time and ensures the highest quality duplications because the HDD is a better source than copying disc to disc.

The SharkCopier LS is a revolutionary product in that it can copy and print in a single standalone duplication tower. Using the LightScribe labeling technology, the SharkCopier LS can be used as a standard duplicator then you flip the disc and you can print directly onto the disc using the same drive. This eliminates the need for ink or ribbon saving money and time.

The SharkCopier DC is perfect for the heavy volume user. Using a daisy chain technology these units can be linked together where multiple towers are controlled by a single source. This will allow a user to link hundreds to thousands of towers together that all work in unison making thousands of discs at one time.

The Cube is a single drive 25 disc capacity autoloader that is perfect for users with little time and less money. At a very low price point, The Cube is perfect for any office or home environment. With the reliable robotic capabilities, the user can attend to other issues while their project is being copied.

We had a tremendous response on these new products as well as our standard line and I really look forward to introducing these products to a wider international market when we attend CeBIT in March.

Success at Gitex

In a quick posting, the Gitex trade show was very enlightening and we made numerous valuable contacts throughout the Middle East and South Asia. I look forward to going next year!

Adventure in Dubai

Recently members of the Vinpower Digital staff (both USA and Taiwan staff) visited Dubai in the United Arab Eremites to exhibit at the Gitex electronics convention which took place from September 8th ~ 12th, 2007. When you travel that far, even though they were there for work, you have to take some time out for pleasure. Dubai is a wondrous place where the leaders of the city have invested a lot of money to attract foreign tourist from all over the world. From picturesque sand dunes to an indoor ski village to the worlds most famous 7 star hotel and so much more, Dubai has a lot for both the adventure seeker and the pampered traveler. The following images show some of the touristy activities that our co-workers enjoyed during their stay.

The Middle East, the Next Frontier in Duplication

Adoption of optical disc duplication is well established throughout the world, whether it’s in the 1st world developed nations or the 3rd world developing nations.  From North American to South America, Europe to Africa, and Asia through Australia Vinpower Digital has equipment being sold or purchased on every inhabited continent.  However, there is one territory where the market exists, but has not exploded to its true potential, and that’s the Middle East.  With wealthy and powerful countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Eremites, and so many others, the Middle East is a fertile market for the right product.

With existing conflicts raging in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran may have frightened many to enter what appears to be a very volatile region.  However, there are so many countries within the Middle East that are very safe and free of international conflict that are unfortunately grouped in as combative nations.   These nations have existing channels of commerce that are clamoring for new electronic equipment such as duplicators as long as you have the right window into the channel.

Recognizing the opportunity in the region, Vinpower Digital is participating in the Gitex International electronics trade show taking place September 8 – 12 in Dubai, U.A.E.  Displaying our line of standalone duplication controllers, manual towers, autoloaders, as well as media and printers, we hope to tap into this bustling market ready for high quality affordable equipment.  Our booth is located in Hall 3 # C3-45, so if you’re in the area, please come visit with us.

Diary of a CE Trade Show

Below is a retrospective of what it’s like to work a CE tradeshow from the perspective of a Vinpower Digital employee in Taiwan.  Irene Liang from our sister company Waytech Media in Taiwan allowed me to recount her experience working and attending the Computex trade show.  Below is an translated summary of Irene’s journal entries:

Vinpower Digital will participate in the 2nd largest CE tradeshow in the world at Computex taking place in Taipei, Taiwan from June 5th ~ 9th, 2007.  This years show has a greater importance because we have so many foreign customers traveling to the show to visit our booth.  This year Vinpower Digital will also be joined by a booth from their sister company Waytech Media in Hall 4, booth # T3101.

This year we launched several new products certain to gain more interest and exposure for our product line.  The blue interface display, light weight SharkCopiers, extension  of our Blu-ray capable duplicators (ShrkBlu) up to 11 drives, 15 target controller, and so much more shows our dedication to meet the needs of this growing market.

Two of our engineers from Vinpower Digital’s corporate office in the USA, Tom and Eddie, flew out 1 week prior to the show to help the Taiwan team set up all of the products for the booths.  Even though we worked hard the whole time they were here, they also livened up the office with their stories and laughter.  We were focused on preparing for Computex, but Tom and Eddie made the experience more enjoyable.

(Mon) 6/4/07

In the afternoon, we borrowed a cargo van from a vendor to deliver our demo equipment to the convention center.  I drove with Eddie and this is the first time either of us had set up a booth before.  I was nervous because everything from our parking location, where we unload, and how we transport the items to our booth were all new to me.  Plus we had two booths to set up in one night, so it was critical everything went smoothly.  All I could do was give it my best shot and hope everything turned out well.  Thankfully, Robert (another member of the engineering team from the USA corp. office) arrived early and received all of the instructions we needed before we arrived.  This saved us a lot of time and because of everyone’s hard work we were able to set up both booths in a short time.  This was the first time in a week when I felt relieved and could relax.  It felt like turning in a midterm paper to your professor and waiting to receive the grades.  So far, everything is working out well and I’m looking forward to the start of the show.

(Tue) 6/5/07

This is the first day of the tradeshow.  Mandy and I left at 6am to pick up a customer from Germany (Frank and his father in-law) who are arriving in the morning.  When we arrived at the airport, our guests had just left the gate.  They were both very friendly which made us feel a lot more comfortable and released the tension we had in getting to the airport.  Our original plan was to pick up them up, drop them off at the hotel, then go to the convention center to finish setting up the booths.  That plan quickly flew out the window as the heavy rain caused huge traffic jams and we were stuck in traffic.  Adding to our troubles, Mandy and I had already exhausted our English vocabulary and were struggling to keep the conversation going.  We contacted Tom and Eddie to ask them to man the booth because we will be late and they too were cursed with the heavy traffic.  To make matters worse, Tom’s car broke down in the middle of the street in the pouring rain.  Our boss, Calvin, not aware of our delay and problems showed up at the Vinpower Digital booth and no one was there, plus all of the equipment was still in boxes under the tables.  This was not our lucky day and very difficult to manage but we made it to the show and everything was eventually set up.  Afterwards it got a lot smoother.

Tonight, we have dinner plans with a customer from Australia.  We communicate frequently over MSN, so I feel like I am meeting a chatroom friend from the internet.  The dinner went very well and we discussed a lot of business issues.  It was a good end to a stressful day.

(Wed) 6/6/07 ~ (Thur) 6/7/07

After a rough start on Tuesday, no one dared to be late for the rest of the show.  These two days went very smooth and our booth looked even better because of flower arrangements sent to us by some of our vendors.  We had a planned visit by a large potential customer from the USA.  The conversation went very well and I felt they were impressed with our presentation as we all put forth out best efforts to speak with them.  We look forward to landing this account.  We also met with many new potential customers who we can hopefully start new business with.  In the evening of the 6th we had a planned dinner with our German customer who we will take on a tour of Taiwan on the 7th.  These two days were very eventful and much easier now that we are accustomed to the trade show.

(Fri) 6/8/07

Today I’m working at the show, but two members of our staff are playing tour guide with our German customer and taking them to Dan-tsui.  Even though it’s raining, they would not let it ruin their day.  Our customers made a special request to try stinky tofu and an oyster omelet which we were happy to oblige.  Afterwards they walked non-stop so they could see everything.  Poor Tom was exhausted and coming upon a massage parlor suggested they get a massage so he could rest.  But they were not interested, foiling Tom’s “perfect” plan to take a break.

In the evening, Mandy was responsible to take our Japanese customers to dinner.  This was a difficult task because Mandy’s Japanese was limited and our customers English was just as limited, so they communicated through hand gestures and broken bits of English and Japanese.  Mandy said it was like they were dancing with their hands flying up and down.  It made me laugh as I pictured it.

(Sat) 6/9/07

This is the last day of the tradeshow.  It was a long and tiring week, but we were determined to end the show on a high note, especially since the show started off on a bad note.  Everything went very smooth as we planned.  Afterwards we had a staff dinner to discuss the overall tradeshow and how we can correct the mistakes that were made.  I think everyone learned a lot and hopefully will not make any mistakes in the future so that we do not have to learn these lessons again

As I look back at the week, we overcame many obstacles, entertained numerous customers, informed many more potential customers and learned a lot about trade shows.  The memories I’ll treasure most of all are the good times and friendships that were created during this show with our co-workers living in the USA.   I hope the show will be successful for our company and that we will receive many orders.  Only time will tell, but now that the show is over, I have more work to do to turn the connections into sales!
