When you participate in a new tradeshow, you never know how your products are going to be received, especially for a specialized industry event like the Flash Media Summit. We were pleasantly surprised at how receptive these titans of the industry were, especially with our upcoming iXCharger, 65W up to 1TB power + storage charger and hard drive in one. Even though this was the first time we exhibited at the FMS, the prestigious judging committee saw fit to award Vinpower with the “Most Innovative Flash Memory Consumer” for the iXCharger, solidifying that we are indeed moving in the right direction with our latest breakthrough in the storage field.

There were a number of visitors to our booth from both the industry and academia that were quite taken at the brilliance in which we were able to marry the two applications. In fact, some of them had made a stab at the concept in the past, but were not able to create a viable product as we have done.

In the end, it is always an honor to receive an award and outstanding complimentary feedback on a product your team has worked long and hard to create, but it’s an especially proud moment when they come from those that are tops in the flash/storage field. These positive reactions continue to fuel us that we’re on the right track. When you travel for vacation, most people typically want to memorialize the trip with photos and videos along the way. That was the case for my family as we traveled out of town and took lots of pictures and videos with my iPhone. Since I’m a huge advocate for backing up those irreplaceable memories, I like to download a copy of that content to store on an external source, in my case, 2 separate external hard drives that I store in separate locations. You can never be too careful and I’d be very upset if I every lost those files.

Video content is everywhere and we’re all creating it through our phones and tablets. Whether you’re creating video content for social media, online retail listings, entertainment, home videos, etc., if you’re creating the content to post, then frequently that content has to be transferred to a 3rd party video editing software to create the final cut. To do so, more often than not, means the user has to then find a way to download the raw video footage onto the device with the video editing software and that could be a full production in itself! For example, I often make videos of our products that we sell through various online retail sites, such as Amazon. In the past, I would use my iPhone to film the content, then I would need to either upload that video to the cloud and then download the file from the cloud to the computer I was using to edit with, or I would need to connect my iPhone to the computer, download the file through iTunes or another software and then upload that file again to the editing software. Every time I hear the demise of optical discs or someone lament that they can’t remember the last time they played a CD or DVD, I am reminded that there is a much bigger market for optical discs and related devices than just everyday consumers. In fact, an article was published recently, indicating that the market for all optical storage products will reach a staggering $33.07 billion USD in the next 10 years. That’s a strong showing for what some like to call a dead technology.

If you think about it, optical discs decline as a storage medium for some consumers due to the cloud and streaming, simply increased the need for digital storage on the business side of cloud storage. Optical discs have proven to be the most cost effective and secure manner to store digital content, and much of cloud storage is offloaded from hard drives in servers to intricate optical disc archiving equipment. Since optical discs do not require electricity or cold temperatures to maintain content, nor can that content be altered or deleted, server farms are electing to offload much of their cold data onto easy to recall optical discs systems.

These and many other factors prove that there is still a lucrative business in the optical storage market and those that understand the market can make a nice profit long into the future!

The reality is, smart phones and tablets are our default cameras. We always have them with us and we use it to take pictures of everything from life affirming events to the meal we’re about to eat. Now consider that more than 80% of those people never backup that content and those images reside on their smart device indefinitely. The problem is, 70 million smartphones are lost each year, with only 7 percent recovered. That means roughly 80% of those 70 million people will lose all those images forever with no recourse.
